Are you receiving errors like “file not found” or “disk not found” you may need chkdsk
There are many more strange errors that can be caused by a corrupt file or problems in the file system. But they will always show when you try to open something or save something. If you receive an error like this your first call should be to run a check on the hard disk. In this article we will have a look at two ways to run a check on your hard disk using chkdsk.
Through my computer
- Click Start.
- Click on My Computer.
- A new window will open displaying the drives in your computer.
- Right click on the drive you want to check.
- A menu will display, Click on Properties.
- A dialog window will open, Click on the Tools tab.
- Click on Check Now…
- In the new dialog click the tick box for these option:
- Automatically fix system errors.
- Scan for and attempt recovery of bad sectors.
- Click Start.
Through the command prompt
- Click Start.
- Click Run.
- Type cmd in the open drop down box
- Click OK.
- A Command Prompt opens
- Type chkdsk <drive> /f.
- Replace <drive> with the drive letter you would like to scan i.e. chkdsk c: /f
- Replace <drive> with the drive letter you would like to scan i.e. chkdsk c: /f
- If you are trying to check the system drive chkdsk may not be able to run, but it gives you the option to do the check on the next time the computer starts.
