Installing Active Directory Federation Services Role

I found this useful guide from Microsoft explaining how to install AD FS in a lab environment. If you read through the guide and even follow the example you will have a pretty good idea of how to install AD FS in a real life installation.

Tekrevol01 27-Oct Preinstallation tasks

This section will give you details of the four computers you will need to setup and evaluate the AD FS install. If you have trouble understanding this section you may need to do some further research into installing Windows Server 2008.

Tekrevol03 27-Oct Installing AD FS Role Services and Configuring Certificates

This section deals with the core setup of AD FS witch contains setting up the certificates for the service. I found this part to be very easy to follow and the Roles wizard dose a very nice job at getting you through this first stage of installing AD FS.

This section deals with the setup of Windows Information Server (IIS) for claims-aware applications.

Configuring the Federation ServersTekrevol05 27-Oct

This section deals with the configuring of AD FS. Federation services are easy to install but getting them to do something useful can be a bit hard without the assistance of a guide like this.

And finally we see how AD FS can be used from the client side.

As you can see from the articles linked here AD FS installations are not for the faint hearted and I believe in real life scenarios it will be a case of more trouble than it is worth. But organisations that rely on working together and have a need to provide a single point of logon for the combined tools they use may find this worth the extra administration. I haven’t heard of anyone planning to use AD FS but please comment below if you are planning too or know of someone that is.
