Tiscali packet management gone bad
Posted by sporg
I came across some very interesting news today. One of my friends mentioned a problem that has been going on for a couple of months with Tiscali’s broadband service. I was shocked when my friend pointed me to this section on Tiscali’s support forum where the top two Sticky posts are all about a problem where users are unable to run online games, VPN’s, ITunes and many other services that run protocols similar to p2p traffic. The main thread in this section is now 33 pages long and the first post is dated back to the 4th October 2007. Amazingly enough these issues have been ongoing for at least three months with no solution in sight.
It is a pity that Tiscali care so little about their customers that they would carry on with the implementation of what clearly is a failed project. And post comments like the one quoted here where hundreds of users are told that this problem is not of high priority. To be fair the IT support personnel on the forum are doing what they can to get the problem solved but even their cries for help seems to be falling on deaf ears.
“Yes, I know. I’ve reported the increase in numbers here and am still working with the network team to sort this once and for all. BUT, as I have said elsewhere, (I know this important to you all), you have to understand it’s not a high priority. I keep bringing this up with the net team and I will continue to bring this up until someone tells me to shut up and go away. (If they do I’ll let you know). I know it’s hard not knowing if it’s being looked at, but trust me it is.” (source: Tiscali Support Forum)
But in this day and age are issues like this avoidable. In a follow up post I will detail some of the options available to IT Managers that could prevent such situations. I hope that Tiscali are able to sort this issue out and afterwards look at what went wrong and let’s hope Tiscali’s management think about the damage this has done to their reputation.
I believe Tiscali have handled this situation very badly and I hope I never have a broadband service provider like Tiscali.
